How to Set Up Daily On-Call Reminders in a Slack Channel

Overview of On-Call Reminders

Tellspin can automatically post a message in a Slack channel to announce who is currently on-call for a given schedule. This is a great way to keep your team informed and ensure everyone knows who to contact for support or incidents.

You can create reminders that fire daily, weekly, or only when a handoff occurs.

How to Create a Daily Reminder

Follow these steps to create a daily announcement in the channel of your choice.

  1. Go to the Tellspin App Home in Slack.
  2. Find the schedule you want to create a reminder for and click the three-dot menu (...) next to it.
  3. Select Add Reminder from the dropdown menu.
  4. In the modal that appears, configure the reminder settings:
    • Frequency: Select Daily.
    • Time: Choose the time of day you want the reminder to be posted.
    • Send To: Select Channel.

Customizing the Reminder Message

You can customize the message that Tellspin posts. The default message is {{shift_user}} is on-call {{handle}}, which will mention the on-call person and the user group associated with the schedule.

You can edit this text to fit your team's needs. For example, you could write: Good morning! Today's on-call engineer is {{shift_user}}. Please direct all issues to {{handle}}.

Choosing the Right Channel

From the Channel dropdown, select the public channel where you want the reminder to be posted.

If the channel is private, you must first invite the Tellspin bot to that channel. To do this, go to the private channel and type /invite @Tellspin.

Verifying the Reminder is Active

Once you've created the reminder, it will appear under the schedule's details in the Tellspin App Home. You can edit or delete it from here at any time.

The reminder will post automatically at the time you configured. You can also click the three-dot menu (...) next to the reminder and select Test Send to post it immediately and confirm it's working as expected.
