How to Use Schedule Overrides
What is a Schedule Override?
A schedule override allows you to temporarily replace the person on-call for a specific date and time range. This is useful for handling situations like vacation, sick leave, or one-time shift swaps without permanently altering your rotation.
The override will automatically update the associated Slack user group and any reminders for the duration of the override period.
Steps to Create an Override
Navigate to the Tellspin App Home in Slack.
Find the schedule you wish to modify and click the three-dot menu (
...).Select Add Override from the menu.

Overrides (1/2) In the modal that appears, fill out the override details:
- User: Select the person who will be taking over the on-call shift.
- Start Date & Time: The date and time the override should begin.
- End Date & Time: The date and time the override should end.

Overrides (2/2) Click Save. The override is now active.
Viewing Active and Upcoming Overrides
After creating an override, you can see it listed directly under the schedule in the Tellspin App Home. The schedule preview will also update to reflect who is on-call during the override period.
How to Delete an Override
If you need to cancel an override, you can easily delete it.
- In the Tellspin App Home, find the schedule with the override you want to remove.
- Locate the override in the list below the schedule details.

Common Use Cases
- Vacation Coverage: An engineer is on vacation for a week, so another team member covers their on-call shift.
- Sick Day: Someone is unexpectedly out sick, and a colleague takes over their shift for the day.
- Shift Swap: Two engineers agree to swap on-call days. Each person creates an override for the day they are covering.
