Why is My Tellspin Schedule Preview Incorrect?

Symptom: Preview Shows Old Information

You open the Tellspin App Home in Slack to check your on-call schedule, but the preview shows past dates, the wrong on-call person, or doesn't reflect a recent change you made, such as adding an override.

Common Causes and Fixes

This issue is almost always related to caching within the Slack client. The underlying schedule data in Tellspin is correct, but the view you are seeing is stale.

Cause 1: Caching in the App Home

Slack's App Home tab can be heavily cached to improve performance. Sometimes, it doesn't automatically refresh after you make a change to a schedule.

Resolution:

  1. Navigate to the Tellspin App Home.
  2. Click the Refresh button located at the top right of the App Home view. This forces Tellspin to reload the latest schedule data.
  3. If the refresh button isn't visible or doesn't work, try reloading your entire Slack client by pressing Cmd+R (on Mac) or Ctrl+R (on Windows/Linux).

Cause 2: An Unsaved Change

If you were in the process of editing a schedule and closed the modal without clicking Save, your changes were not applied. The preview will still show the old schedule configuration.

Resolution:

  1. Click the three-dot menu (...) next to the schedule and select Edit.
  2. Re-apply your desired changes (e.g., add a participant, change the handoff time).
  3. Ensure you click the Save button to confirm the changes.

Cause 3: An Active Override

If the preview shows an unexpected person on-call, it may be because of an active override. Overrides temporarily replace the normal rotation.

Resolution:

  1. In the App Home, look for an Overrides section listed below the schedule details.

  2. Review any active overrides to see if they explain the on-call person shown in the preview.

Verifying the Correct On-Call User

After refreshing the App Home, the schedule preview should update to show the correct upcoming shifts. If you are still unsure, you can verify the current on-call person by mentioning the schedule's user group (e.g., @dev-on-call) in any channel. The user who is mentioned is the one who is currently on-call.
