How to Configure a Weekends-Only On-Call Rotation

Use Case: Weekend and After-Hours Support

For many teams, on-call responsibilities change over the weekend. You can create a Tellspin schedule that is only active on Saturday and Sunday, which is perfect for a dedicated weekend support team or an escalation path for after-hours issues.

Steps to Create a Weekend Schedule

  1. From the Tellspin App Home, click Create Schedule.

  2. Fill in the basic details for your weekend schedule.

  3. In the Schedule section, click the Advanced button.

  4. Under Days of the week, uncheck all days except for Saturday and Sunday.

Setting the Handoff Time

The handoff timing is crucial for a weekend schedule. You are defining when the weekend shift begins and ends.

  • Rotation frequency: If one person covers the entire weekend, set this to Weekly.
  • Handoff day: Set this to Friday.
  • Handoff time: Set this to the time the weekend shift begins (e.g., 5:00 PM).

With this configuration, the schedule will become active at 5:00 PM on Friday and remain active until the next handoff time, which will be the following Friday. However, because the schedule is only enabled on Saturday and Sunday, the user group will only be populated during the weekend.

Verifying the Schedule Preview

The schedule preview will show the handoff occurring on Friday evening. The on-call user will be active for Saturday and Sunday, and the schedule will show as inactive during the weekdays.

Using with a Weekdays-Only Schedule for 24/7 Coverage

To provide full 24/7 coverage, you can create this weekends-only schedule and combine it with a separate weekdays-only schedule.

By using the Schedule Triage feature, you can merge both schedules into a single, unified on-call user group that always has the correct person, whether it's a weekday or the weekend.
