Opsgenie to Slack

Keep your Slack on-call handle when Opsgenie goes away

Tellspin keeps a Slack user group pointed at whoever is on call in Opsgenie. Your team mentions one handle and it reaches one person. When Opsgenie shuts down on April 5, 2027, that handle can keep working.

Pick your path off Opsgenie

Atlassian says Opsgenie shuts down on April 5, 2027, and data you haven't moved by then gets deleted. What I'd do with your Slack handle depends on where you go next.

You only use Opsgenie for the rotation

Nothing pages you from it. People just need to know who to ask. I'd move the rotation into Tellspin. Build it in Slack once and keep the same @handle.

You're moving to PagerDuty or Datadog On-Call

Tellspin syncs both. When the new schedule is live, I'd point your @handle at it so your team keeps mentioning the same name.

You're moving to Jira Service Management or Compass

Tellspin can't read their on-call schedules today. You could run the rotation in Tellspin too, but then you have two schedules to keep in step. Email me if this is you, since it tells me what to build next.

Where Tellspin fits

Tellspin answers who to ask right now in Slack. Paging isn't in it yet, so if Opsgenie pages your team, I'd have a paging tool lined up before April. Tellspin works right next to it.

I'm building Slack-first paging. Email me at dan@tellspin.com if you want to hear when it's ready.

How the sync works today

  • Opsgenie sync is on the Business plan and up.
  • Connect from the Tellspin App Home with an Opsgenie API key.
  • The key only needs read access to schedules.
  • Tellspin checks for changes every 5 minutes.
  • Opsgenie stays the source of truth for the rotation.
  • People are matched by email, and you can map any that differ.
  • Overrides made in Opsgenie flow into Slack. Overrides made in Tellspin change who Slack reaches, and aren't written back.

The details are in the Opsgenie docs. For the longer version of the migration, read what the Opsgenie shutdown means for your Slack on-call handle.

A vortex of interruptions blowing toward a card tower of focus
“Imagine your focus was a card tower and interruptions were knocking it down.”
